If you’ve ever found yourself humming along to the radio in the car or singing in the shower, but felt too nervous to join a real group, you aren't alone. Many of the members of the Suffolk Men's Chorus started in the exact same place.
There is a common myth that you have to be a trained vocalist to join a choir. We’re here to tell you that is simply not true.
Is this for me? (Hint: Yes!) You don't need a music degree, and you don’t need to be able to read sheet music. In fact, you don’t even need to be "good" at singing when you start. Most of the men who join us are looking for two things:
- A great social outlet: We’re a friendly group of guys from all walks of life who enjoy each other’s company.
- A stress reliever: There is nothing quite like the feeling of making a big, resonant sound with a group of people. It’s one of the best ways to switch off from the pressures of work and daily life.
What to expect at your first rehearsal
We know walking into a new room can be daunting. Here is how it usually goes:
- No formal auditions: We don’t do scary solo auditions. We’re all about the collective sound.
- Come and listen: If you’re not ready to sing on your first night, just come along, have a tea (or a pint!), and see what we’re all about.
- We’re all in this together: You’ll be standing next to people who were nervous on their first day, too. Our more experienced members are always happy to help you find your feet.
The "Side Effects" of Joining a Choir
Beyond just learning some songs, our members often tell us they’ve gained unexpected benefits:
- Improved mood: Singing is scientifically proven to release "feel-good" endorphins.
- Better breathing: You’ll naturally learn better posture and breath control without even trying.
- A new social circle: We’re more than just a choir; we’re a group of mates who support each other.
Whether you’re an experienced singer or just love to sing in the shower, you’ll find a warm, welcoming community where your voice matters. Singing together not only builds confidence and musical skill, but also creates lasting friendships and unforgettable moments.
With inspiring rehearsals, exciting performances, and a supportive atmosphere, our choir is the perfect place to express yourself, de-stress, and have fun. Come along and discover the joy of making music together—you might be surprised by what you can achieve.
