If you’ve ever found yourself humming along to the radio in the car or singing in the shower, but felt too nervous to join a real group, you aren't alone. Many of the members of the Suffolk Men's Chorus started in the exact same place.

There is a common myth that you have to be a trained vocalist to join a choir. We’re here to tell you that is simply not true.

Is this for me? (Hint: Yes!) You don't need a music degree, and you don’t need to be able to read sheet music. In fact, you don’t even need to be "good" at singing when you start. Most of the men who join us are looking for two things:

  • A great social outlet: We’re a friendly group of guys from all walks of life who enjoy each other’s company.
  • A stress reliever: There is nothing quite like the feeling of making a big, resonant sound with a group of people. It’s one of the best ways to switch off from the pressures of work and daily life.

What to expect at your first rehearsal
We know walking into a new room can be daunting. Here is how it usually goes:

  • No formal auditions: We don’t do scary solo auditions. We’re all about the collective sound.
  • Come and listen: If you’re not ready to sing on your first night, just come along, have a tea (or a pint!), and see what we’re all about.
  • We’re all in this together: You’ll be standing next to people who were nervous on their first day, too. Our more experienced members are always happy to help you find your feet.

The "Side Effects" of Joining a Choir
Beyond just learning some songs, our members often tell us they’ve gained unexpected benefits:

  • Improved mood: Singing is scientifically proven to release "feel-good" endorphins.
  • Better breathing: You’ll naturally learn better posture and breath control without even trying.
  • A new social circle: We’re more than just a choir; we’re a group of mates who support each other.

Whether you’re an experienced singer or just love to sing in the shower, you’ll find a warm, welcoming community where your voice matters. Singing together not only builds confidence and musical skill, but also creates lasting friendships and unforgettable moments.

With inspiring rehearsals, exciting performances, and a supportive atmosphere, our choir is the perfect place to express yourself, de-stress, and have fun. Come along and discover the joy of making music together—you might be surprised by what you can achieve.

What our members say :
Mike - 1st Tenor "Very welcoming group. Music is upbeat, varied and great fun."

Stephen - 2nd Tenor "Many happy years of singing in the choir and singing at the Royal Albert Hall stands out."

Philip - 2nd Tenor "Dear Carol, I wanted to write as a serving choir member, endorsing the choir and your good work in bringing it so far forward in recent years. I have been in the choir a good number of years now and always found it an inspirational source of friendship and musical enjoyment. I have no doubt that the choir promotes both mental well-being and physical health. I can recall the many concerts and so many rehearsals, where we have entertained audiences and each other and the happiness and satisfaction gained. So thanks to you, our accompanist Natasha and all the men present and past who have helped to colour each other's lives with male voice harmony."

Mike H - 1st Bass "I love singing and performing, and since joining Suffolk Men’s Chorus recently my singing has improved so much. The chaps are very friendly, welcoming, helpful and supportive. Carol Goates is amazing — she sets a very high standard but gets us there through careful coaching and clear explanation of what we’re trying to achieve. Singing without a score was a really hard transition at first, but it’s been so worth it as we sound so much better with our heads up and engaging with the audience. The range of music is incredibly varied and it’s simply a pleasure to be part of the choir."

Rob - 1st Tenor "Whether you are looking for a great bunch of friends, or enjoy a good singing session, this choir will provide both comfortably. Meeting once a week for rehearsals - and having a good laugh while doing it - we perform a wide repertoire of songs in our concerts for charities and good causes. Led by Carol (our musical director ) and Natasha (our accompanist), we have been moulded into a quality choir - and no one needed an audition to join ! I have had a great time with these guys - and looking forward to my sixth year with them!"

Keith - 2nd Bass "Sad individual that I am I look forward to these guys company each week as we learn new songs and then deliver them on stage, in concert. We enjoy each others company and make a lovely noise too!"
